Pepin, WI- Chippewa Bank $5 Nov. 1, 1856 G4 Krause G4 Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
Organized as a free bank in 1856, the bank remained in business until 1861 when it, and a number of other free banks, failed during the opening months of the Civil War. The design incorporates the state comptroller die, a vignette of two horses taking note of an approaching train, and another of a seated Native American warrior. The note is printed on India paper and has the usual small POCs in the signature lines. Two examples of this note design appeared in Lot 2075 of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. We have pegged the number of surviving Proofs of this design at around four or five examples.
From the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection, Part II
