    Description

New York, NY- Mechanics' Bank of the City of New York $5 18__ as G216b Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ★ .
The bank was in operation from 1810 until 1865 when it became the Mechanics National Bank of the City of New York. This note was originally designed in the 1820s-30s by Fairman, Draper, Underwood & Co., and was freshened sometime after 1858 (note the ABNCo monogram) by the addition of red end panels and the state bank department die, reflecting the bank's status at the time. Featuring a vignette of Archimedes lifting the world with his lever and printed on India paper with the usual small POCs in the signature lines, this note has earned PMG's Black Star designation for exceptional eye appeal. There were two examples of this note that appeared as part of Lot 1247 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale that probably represent most, if not all, of the surviving population of Proofs.
