Iconic Title and Rarity- Irving Bank $10 Proof-Three Known

New York, NY- Irving Bank $10 18__ NY-1665 G12 Proof PCGS Very Choice New 64.
A simply fabulous Proof from this New York City institution which later adopted a national charter and became the Irving National Bank. There are three known examples of this denomination and whenever they get offered, strong prices ensue due their style, rarity, and title recognition. The title is evocative of Washington Irving, the great American essayist and author whose best known works are his short stories The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. Interestingly, the portrait used on most known notes, which are nearly all proofs, is a bank officer with a "Washington Irving" look. In reality, the only verified note with the Irving portrait is the $1 issued note we sold in the Len Glazer collection and which possesses a long pedigree chain. Custom to this series is the top center vignette with a magnificent vignette of "Sunnyside," Irving's home, which still stands just south of the Tappan Zee Bridge in Tarrytown, New York in Irving's beloved Hudson Valley. This is the second time we've offered an individual $10 proof. This plate "B" was originally on the proof sheet in our Gordon Harris sale that came from the Thomas Morris Estate sale held by Bill Donlon. That Plate C note realized $1,955 in our January 2011 FUN sale graded the same as this. The "A" impression brought $2,990 in the 2010 52 Collection Part I sale and is ensconced in a major collection. Conservatively estimated in our view considering those sale's records. This example has been hole punch cancelled and mounted on cardstock.
