New Orleans, LA- City of New Orleans $5 Jan. 1, 1863 PCGS Choice About New 55.
The City of New Orleans issued a number of series of notes through the years to fund various programs, including the redemption of merchant scrip in 1862. This note was part of an issue authorized on December 8,1862 (Ordinance 6106) to fund taxes due and payable in 1862 and remaining unpaid on January 1, 1863. Newspaper notices in 1865 indicated that $199,940 had been redeemed and destroyed. It is a bit unusual in that ABNCo usually got these post-capture orders. But in this case, R.C. Root, Anthony & Co. of New York was the source. The note is still quite attractive with a vignette of, perhaps, America (note the fasces and sword) standing by Prosperity as well as a more traditional vignette of a pelican feeding its young. Green tints and protective elements as well as a green decorative back complete the package. We are presently aware of four examples of this note, with this being the second finest known. The note has three POCs in the top margin.
