    The antebellum goal of this railroad was to connect the Gulf Coast with the Midwest. When the Civil War started, its tracks ran from New Orleans to Canton, Mississippi. The task of rebuilding the railroad after the war fell on the shoulders of former Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard, who became the railroad's president. (Total: 2 notes)
