New Haven, CT- Eagle Bank $2 Dec. 1, 1818 G44 Proof PMG Uncirculated 62.
The Eagle Bank opened in 1812 and led a rocky existence until it collapsed in 1825 due to poor management and aggressive speculation. Given the name of the bank, it is not surprising that central vignette on this note depicts an eagle with one of its talons on top of a key next to a strong box, suggesting Fidelity (this is usually symbolized by a dog rather than an eagle). The note is printed on India paper, with no forms of cancellation present in the signature lines. There is faint bleed through from what appears to be a red rubberstamp impression on the back and a comparison of the notes suggests that this may be the Haxby plate note. PMG mentions that the note has been previously mounted, with mounting adhesive stains along the left margin and minor mounting remnants in one location on the back. In any case, it predates the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and probably has a surviving example population of less than ten pieces according to one source.
