    Description

Memphis, TN- River Bank $20 18__ G6a Garland Proof PMG Uncirculated 62
The River Bank was organized as a free bank in 1858 and remained in business for a short period of time, probably not much later than 1860. The $20 design is simple, yet striking, with an unusual portrait of Liberty or perhaps America, wearing a Phrygian cap (Liberty cap) surrounded by stars. Two cupids, representing Mercury and Agriculture, appear on the right end. The design also benefits from a light red overall tint and a large dark red and white 20 counter. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. PMG has noted the mounting remnants on the back of the note.
