Lowell, MA- Prescott Bank $20 186_ G18a Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was incorporated in 1850 and remained in business until 1865 when it became the Prescott National Bank of Lowell. This absolutely stunning red and black $20 depicts Science and also has an oval portrait of an unidentified male (probably associated with the bank). Lavish use of the secondary color red includes end panels and protector blocks over the signature lines. The note is printed on India paper and has small POCs in the signature lines. PMG mentions that the note was previously mounted based on two telltale stamp hinge remnants in the middle of the left and right margins. These suggest that this note traces its provenance perhaps as far back as D.C. Wismer in th 1930s. This design was not represented in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale but was known to, and illustrated by, Haxby. This note may, in fact, very well be the Haxby plate note and is quite likely unique.
