    Colorful $2 Proof

Lockport, NY- Niagara County Bank $2 July 1, 1856 G4a Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The bank was first organized in 1856 and remained in business until becoming the Niagara County National Bank of Lockport in late 1864. The layout and color of this design are simply amazing. Danforth Wright made wonderful use of a dark brick red tint to give the note an almost three dimensional appearance, highlighting the simple oval portrait of DeWitt Clinton as well as other design elements like the state bank department die and counters. Understandably, this note was one of the centerpieces of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale where it appeared as part of Lot 1172 and was illustrated in color. It was adjudged to be unique in 1990 and nothing has transpired in the last three decades to alter that assessment.
