    Description

Lawrence, KS- Lawrence Bank $3 18__ Remainder G6a Whitfield 215 PCGS Extremely Fine 45.
The Lawrence Bank was chartered on February 11, 1858 and opened for business in 1860. When Kansas became a state in January 1861, the bank had to meet new requirements regarding security for its circulation and minimum specie reserves. In 1862, the bank ceased being a bank of issue and began doing only an exchange business. The bank was burned to the ground in 1863 by Quantrill's raiders. The bank never reopened, but continued to redeem notes until January 1864 when it closed its doors for the final time. This $3 remainder is a stunning red-orange and black note depicting a busy waterfront scene titled St. Louis Waterfront and a vignette of a young Native American woman. This note is also a scarcer use of Lyman's Protection which divided the note into different proportions depending on the denomination. If you are looking for a great representative for Kansas in your collection, you can not ask for anything much nicer than this note that was once part of the Eric P. Newman Collection
