    Description

Kaskaskia, IL- Bank of Cairo $3 as G18 Proof PMG Uncirculated 62.
Operating from an earlier charter that had been granted in 1816, this bank endured for a few years in the late 1830s and early 1840s until disappearing from the scene. The main features of this design include an oval vignette of cattle, a busy harbor scene, a portrait of Washington, and two medallion heads which flank the center harbor vignette. The note is on cardstock and has four of the usual POCs in the signature lines. PMG notes that this example has evidence of previous mounting. This note appeared as part of the ABNCo Archives holdings in 1990 and resurfaced eight years later in one of the Schingoethe sales. In addition, Haxby illustrates another example (which has six POCs), and we sold (several times) the example from the Eric P. Newman collection.
From the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection
