Extremely Rare 1866 Engraved Face Date $1 Union Military Bond

Jefferson City, MO - State of Missouri-Union Military Bond $1 May 1, 1866 Cr. UG31. PCGS Very Fine 30.
This third $1 Union Military Bond is from the last engraved face date from the series, but has the same engraved Feb. 20, 1865 enactment on the back as the previous (Criswell notes the back engraved enactment as "1866"). As on the UG11 and UG21, the face shows Mosely at the upper left and America as a Native American princess at the right center. The engraved serial number is in blue, not red. There is no back endorsement, only a penciled notation on the upper left margin. Plate A. No. 995. This is an extremely rare type, not pictured in the current Shull-Criswell book, and several grades better than the Vacca collection example. Another vibrant and well-margined example and an important, specialized late-date rarity.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
