    Description

Jamestown, IN- State Stock Bank $5 18__ as G6 Wolka 0965-08 PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
The State Stock Bank was an Indiana free bank that opened in 1853 and remained in business until somewhere between late 1854 to early 1855 when it, and many of the other free banks in the state, suspended, due , in part, to the Panic of 1854. The $5 design incorporates one variation of Danforth, Wright's classic train vignette that was in widespread use in Indiana and elsewhere. Also present is a block of five Cyrus Durand patent engraved lathework strips that were intended to match the denomination as a means of preventing attempts to raise the note to a higher denomination. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. There were two examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale in Lot 417.
