    Description

Houston, TX- Republic of Texas Treasury Warrant $10 Dec. 15, 1837 Cr. H3A Medlar 30 PMG Very Fine 20 Net.
We have now auctioned only two different examples of this Medlar number. The other Medlar 30 was part of the Eric Newman Collection. It graded PCGS VF 25 Apparent and went for $4,700 in April, 2015. The piece in this lot is made payable to Wm. G. Cooke. Cooke not only endorsed the note on the back, his signature is also found in the pay to block on the face. This note has the secretarial signature of Saml. Houston. Cooke was made the official signer of President Sam Houston's name on promissory notes of the Republic on June 9, 1837 by the Texas Legislature. This was necessary due to a wrist injury suffered by Houston at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend on March 26-27, 1814. This was during the Creek War of 1813-14 in Mississippi Territory, now central Alabama. Cooke served in his signing position until November 11, 1839. Cooke signed his own name twice and Houston's once on this warrant. This note has an "Audited and a Funded" rubber stamping. It has also been severed and reattached with tape repairs. A piece was added to repair the cut out cancel.
