Darien, GA- Bank of Darien Georgia $50 Jan. 1, 1820 G44 PMG Very Fine 30.
Listed by Haxby as NDA (No Description Available) indicating he had never seen the note, this $50 is a rare high denomination note from a bank that was organized in 1818-19 with six branches and remained in business until 1841. For the era, the note is quite ornate with a large vignette of an eagle with barrels, and a busy port scene in the background. While we have sold several $50s from the bank, this is the first appearance of this earlier design in one of our public auctions. PMG mentions stains which are light and do not distract from this rare note's desirability.
