Danville, VA- Danville Bank $1 Jan. 2, 1862 G10a Jones BD05-06 PCGS Extremely Fine 40PPQ.
Danville's remote location, being only three miles from the North Carolina border served to protect it from the massive destruction inflicted upon most of the state. It served as the location for military hospitals, armament factories, and most notably prison facilities for nearly 7,000 Union prisoners of war between 1863 and 1865. Danville served as the last capital of the Confederacy from April 3-10, 1865. The Danville Bank was authorized by the state legislature in 1856 and presumably closed at the conclusion of the war. Printed by Hoyer & Ludwig in 1861, when the firm found time to squeeze in more profitable orders from private customers such as the Danville Bank along with its voluminous orders for Confederate Treasury Notes, this emergency issue made in January, 1862 is actually an attractive note with an overall red tint and a darker red ONE protector. The note has the appearance of an Uncirculated example when looking at the face and has no impairments that are even worthy of mention.
