Dalton, GA- Cherokee Insurance & Banking Co. $1 Sep. 1, 1854 as G2 Proof PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
The company was organized in 1854 and appears to have remained in business until at least January, 1863 when it issued a series of fractional scrip notes. The institution had probably closed by the time Dalton became a front line in 1864. This note features a vignette of Navigation with an eagle and a very large vignette of a Native American pondering the encroachment of "Civilization" in the form of a distant passenger train. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock that is affixed to a Danforth Wright archive book card. The usual small POCs appear in the signature lines. There were three examples of this design in the ABNCo Archives holdings dispersed in 1990. Decidedly rare and likely to stay that way.
From the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection, Part II
