    Description

Cannelton, IN- Farmers and Mechanics Bank $5 Aug. 25, 1858 G8 Wolka 0285-04 PMG Uncirculated 62.
This bank was a fraudulent institution that placed virtually all of its circulation in the Northeast, far from Cannelton. This fraud was picked up rather quickly and the bank faded from the scene in the same year it opened, 1858. The design features a very nice large locomotive vignette flanked by vignettes of Minerva and Ceres. PMG mentions that the note is toned, but in your cataloger's experience, the paper used for notes for this issuer is almost always rather dark.
