Bridgeport, CT- Merchants Exchange Bank $1 18__ as G2a Proof PMG Choice About Unc 58.
The Merchants Exchange Bank was organized in 1856 but never legitimately opened for business. Notes were printed and issued fraudulently. The main elements of the design are vignettes of Ceres at left, a boilermaker taking a break at center, and a passenger train at right. A small vignette of a dog appears at bottom center. An overall red tint and red and white 1-1-1 protector complete the design. The note is printed on India paper with the usual POCs in the signature lines. While the circulation notes are somewhat common, the same can not be said for the proofs. The 1990 ABNCo Archives sale had seven examples of this variety with the tint in Lots 42 and 43.
