    Description

Boston, MA- Union Bank $500 18__ G264a Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64, 6 POCs.
The Union Bank was chartered in 1792 and continued in business until 1865 when it became the National Union Bank of Boston. This design was originally developed during the 1820s but was kept on hand and sparingly used as late as the 1850s-1860s as is witnessed by the ABNCo monogram that appears just to the right of BOSTON. The design's longevity was probably aided by the fact that large denomination notes were mainly used in bank-to-bank transactions. Large denomination notes would also attract additional scrutiny to assure that the note was not a counterfeit. This note is formerly from the Tom Denly Collection and appears to have served as the plate note in Haxby's 1988 catalog. Very rare with a small handful of examples known.
