    Counterfeit Santa Claus Note

Boston, MA- Howard Banking Company Counterfeit $5 Aug. 23, 1858 C8a PMG Choice Fine 15.
The bank operated under this banner from 1853 until 1858 when it became the Howard Bank. For numismatists, its claim to fame resides with this $5 issue. Rare as a genuine note, this design attracted the interest of counterfeiters who produced a middling copy that is a scarce and very popular note with collectors to this day. This example showcases a large central vignette of Santa and his sleigh getting ready to depart some lucky child's rooftop. It has seen some circulation but has survived the ordeal without any repairs or meaningful impairments aside from honest wear.
