DescriptionBoston, MA- City Bank $500 Promissory Note 18__ UNL Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was in operation from 1822 when it was chartered until 1864 when it became the National City Bank of Boston. This $500 appears to be a demand note at first glance but is actually a 5% promissory note, The note features a vignette of an allegorical maiden reclining in a large seashell holding a trident. The note is printed on India paper with thin cutouts in the President and Cashier signature lines. This design was not represented in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale nor in the landmark Tom Denly Collection of Boston Obsolete Currency and Scrip. With no public auction appearances in at least the last decade, we are comfortable that there are very few examples of this design surviving. Decidedly rare and likely to stay that way.
