Boston, MA- Bank of the Republic $20 Feb. 3, 186_ as G12a Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was organized in 1859 and remained in operation until 1864 when it became the National Bank of the Republic. This is one of the most striking notes in the entire field of obsolete bank notes. The bank title, counter surrounds, and two 20 protectors are printed in red, Portraits of George and Martha Washington flank a large vignette of America. The state auditor's seal and a standing sailor anchor the ends of the note. This example is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. PMG notes a repair that appears to be an edge tear in the vicinity of Washington's portrait. Several sources indicate that the surviving Proof population of this design is around two examples.
