Baton Rouge, LA- Parish of East Baton Rouge 5¢ Oct. 9, 1862 PCGS Fine 15.
These parish notes were fundable into 8% state bonds when presented in sums of $5. Baton Rouge was abandoned as the seat of state government the day before New Orleans fell in 1862 (April 25). Union forces first occupied it on May 29, 1862. A Confederate attack on August 5, 1862 was repulsed but both sides withdrew from the city. Union forces returned in the Autumn of 1862 about the time these notes were issued. The notes are carefully worded and make no mention of Confederate funds as a redemption means although it is stated that the notes can be funded into 8% bonds, perhaps issued by the city. This design is scarce with only a handful of examples crossing the auction block in recent years. Ex: Eric P. Newman Collection.
