    First Reported $2 Exchequer

Austin, TX- Republic of Texas Exchequer Note $2 Apr. 1, 1843 Cr. A15 Medlar 35 PMG Good 4.
A rare class of Texas notes in general with the $2 denomination being listed as unknown in both the Criswell and Medlar references. This was the last paper money issue of the Republic and was current from 1842-45. Exchequer notes saw extensive circulation and were closely controlled. Only 1,000 of the $2s were issued, and when they were redeemed, they were not cancelled, but destroyed. We have auctioned only four Exchequers in the past and they were two 25¢ pieces, a 50¢, and the last was a $5 that crossed our auction block in January, 2012. The $2 example in this lot has edge wear and internal splits appropriate for the assigned grade, but very little interferes with the main design features. The "Sam Houston" signature was executed by Washington D. Miller according to, The Paper Republic by James P. Bevill on page 273. Miller was Houston's personal secretary and was paid one half cent per signature. This may be the only chance to add this previously unknown Exchequer denomination to your collection, so be prepared.
