Lone Finest Graded 1929 Type 2 $100 National Bank Note

    Winona, MN - $100 1929 Ty. 2 The Winona National & Savings Bank Ch. # 10865
Type 2 $100 National Bank Notes are one of the scarcest types for 20th century United States currency. There are fewer than 400 known from all banks in the country combined. After close to a decade and a half of grading, PMG has only graded three examples in Uncirculated grade ranges, with this the finest they have seen. PCGS has graded four examples in Uncirculated grades, the finest of which is a 64PPQ. Accordingly, the National Bank Note Census, curated by Andrew Shiva, just 11 Type 2 $100 notes are listed as Uncirculated in the census. This is in line with what has been seen by the grading services, making a contender very unlikely.

Aside from being a tremendous grade rarity for the type, this note happens to also be very appealing for rarity on the state level. The WN & SB was the only charter number to issue Type 2 $100s in the entire state, and despite opening in 1916, it only issued Type 2 notes. Its total release of this denomination and type was a paltry 144 examples. This beautiful specimen grades PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ with white paper, dark inks, full margins, and paper originality. This is now the highest graded $100 known on the bank as this piece was listed with a grade of "unknown" in the census as it has never before appeared at auction. Our only experience with auctioning a Type 2 $100 on this institution was back in April 2016 when we offered a PMG Very Fine 30. As a trophy note for National Bank Note type collectors, we see no reason why our current note will not easily reach, and even exceed...
