    Description

Wheeling, WV - $20 1882 Brown Back Fr. 504 The National Exchange Bank Ch. # 5164
$20 Brown Backs are scarce indeed from the Mountain State, with only thirty listed in the current National Bank Note census. Most all are low grade, with only four listed as high as Extremely Fine, with none finer, making this bright and fully original piece a strong candidate for the finest known. The state seal was adopted shortly after the counties that make up West Virginia seceded from Virginia in 1863. The official state seal that was adopted after statehood is somewhat crowded, and the seal on West Virginia's Nationals is little better, showing two mountaineers, one holding a pick and the other an axe, while between them is a rock with the date June 20, 1863, the date of West Virginia's admission to the Union. To the left is a plow, and to the right a view of a railroad viaduct found in Preston County that was considered one of the engineering marvels of the day. Below, a streamer carries the motto Montani Semper Liberi, "Mountaineers are Always Free". PCGS About New 50PPQ.
