    Description

First National Bank of Salem, WV, Charter #7250. 1902 $5 Third Charter Plain Back, Fr-598, VF. Excellent margins, strong color, and great signatures add up to an eye appealing note. The fact that this is a rare bank certainly doesn't hurt either. The note is crisp with several heavier folds and light soiling along one of them. A similar note in the same grade realized $350+ in a 1997 auction. In a stronger market for better notes, we expect this note to attract considerable attention and realize a price in excess of that realized in the 1997 auction. This is a one-bank town and there was only $3,460 in large size notes outstanding at the close of the bank in 1935.
