    First Ever Auction Appearance

Waverly, VA - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 606 The First NB Ch. # (S)10914
The census from this one bank southside community is quite deceiving, as it shows three examples known from this one bank large only location. Only one, however, is listed with a serial number, and none, according to our records, the National Bank Note Census, and Track & Price, have ever been available to collectors at public sale. Those of us who, including your cataloguer, are "old timers" might know the answer as to why no example from Waverly has ever been available to collectors at public sale, as this community was the home of an individual who was for many years one of the preeminent collectors of both Virginia obsolete and Virginia National Currency and whose National Bank Notes have, to the best of our knowledge, never come out after his passing. For one fortunate Virginia collector, our offering tonight means obtaining a new town as well as a new bank, not a common achievement in a state boasting as many collectors as the Old Dominion contains. PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25, with some very light staining that is barely worthy of mention.
