Abingdon, VA - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 477 The First NB Ch. # (S)5150
The same Virginia seal is found on First Charter and Brown Back notes. The seal on the notes is a very close approximation of the seal adopted by Virginia in 1776. It shows a triumphant Virtus with a spear in her right hand and a sheathed sword in her left. She is posed with her left foot on the prostrate body of Tyranny, whose crown has fallen off and who has a club in his right hand and a broken chain in his left. Below a streamer reads Sic Semper Tyrannis, Latin for "This Ever to Tyrants". Students of history might remember this phrase was shouted by John Wilkes Booth as he leaped from the balcony of Ford's Theater after assassinating President Lincoln. Pen signed PCGS Extremely Fine 40, well centered and very nice in appearance.
