    Description

    Rare Brownsville Red Seal $10

Brownsville, TX - $10 1902 Red Seal Fr. 613 The Merchants National Bank Ch. # (S)7002 PMG Choice Fine 15.
The only Red Seals documented from this charter number are the $10 in this lot and a single $20. These two notes have previously appeared just three times at auction, with the final appearance being in 2010 before our current offering. The population of two Red Seals documented from this bank has not changed since at least 2003. The example in this lot has the printed signature of President E. H. Goodrich, while the signature of Cashier J. G. Fernandez has faded. They served together from 1904-10, with Fernandez becoming president of this bank during the years 1911-16. Later, he would serve as president of the State National Bank of Brownsville, charter number 12236, from 1930 through the end of the National Bank Note era. The note has retained excellent color for the grade and is likely to see stiff competition before the hammer falls, as any Texas Red Seal is a significant item.
