Unique for the Bank & Town

Reedville, VA - $10 1902 Plain Back Fr. 632 The Commonwealth NB Ch. # (S)10827
From our sale of the Emmett Brooks collection in January, 2003, where we described it "A great note that was unique when it was discovered, has been unique for the intervening twenty five years, and will likely always remain unique. It comes from the sole bank in rural Northumberland County, and from a remote community of watermen plying their trade on the adjacent waters of Chesapeake Bay. This institution lasted but five years, issuing just a handful of notes before disappearing in 1921. We well remember the excitement this note's discovery caused when it was unveiled in 1978 by our friend Bob Cohen, and the intense disappointment of other collectors when Bob made the decision to sell this example to Emmett Brooks. Pleasing PMG Choice Fine 15, with purple signatures, a literal once in a lifetime opportunity for one lucky collector to add this town and bank to his holdings tonight." At that sale it realized $10,350 against a pre-sale estimate of $6000-9000, and, in an even more sophisticated market, will certainly fetch more this evening. Still unique, and likely to remain that way forever, and one of the highlights of The Old Line collection. PMG Choice Fine 15.
