One of Two Know-The Only Example Available to Collectors in Over Forty Years

Our consignor obtained this great rarity when we auctioned the Jim O'Neal Collection twelve years ago. At that time we said "This note, one of the star attractions of the O'Neal holdings, is a classic numismatic rarity, as it is one of just two known $100 examples from the First National Gold Bank of Petaluma and one of just nine $100 National Gold Bank Notes known from all banks combined, many of which are institutionally held or have not been seen for decades. This piece last appeared on the market in 1998, where it realized the then unheard-of price of $25,300, an inordinately high sum for any National Gold Bank Note in those halcyon days of little demand and few buyers. The note has a few miniscule restorations, all professionally done and virtually impossible to find without extensive searching, but the signatures are clear and the color and overall appearance commensurate with a note that would be eagerly accepted by even the most discerning of collectors. Very Good, a note almost impossible to estimate in the current rarity driven market, but likely irreplaceable at any price once the hammer falls this evening, as the only other known $100 Petaluma example has been off the market for well over thirty years." Estimated at that sale at $50,000-$80,000, it blew past the estimate to close at $97,750. The only thing that has changed during the past dozen years is that our description is now out of date...instead of the other Petaluma note having been off the market for well over thirty years, it has now been off the market for well over forty years.
