Wyoming, PA - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 600 The First NB Ch. # 8517
This was the only issuing bank in this Luzerne County local. Although it issued in excess of $1,000,000, by 1935 only $1,950 of its large notes remained in circulation, with only seven pieces surfacing to date. The Very Fine example we offer tonight still has darkly stamped officers' signatures and appears to have been carried as a treasured keepsake for some time, as the folds are a bit on the sharp side and there is also a tad of wallet dye transfer. A subtle area of translucency is also visible about an area where the paper surfaces have been rejoined along the right hand fold separation. We last had a note on this bank in our 2004 Central States auction, where a Very Fine+ that looked only marginally nicer than this one sold for $1,006.25. Overall, this scarce note looks far nicer than it sounds and will be a welcome addition to any collection formed around scarcer commonwealth material, so plan on a strong bid to wrest this from your adversaries tonight.
