Magnificent PCGS Graded Gem New 66 $50 Brown Back

Washington, PA - $50 1882 Brown Back Fr. 508 The First NB Ch. # (E)586
This extraordinary $50 Brown Back first appeared in our January 2006 FUN Auction, where we cataloged it as follows: "This is a beautiful note which is new to the census, although it fits into a four note run of $50 Brown Backs, all of which are listed as CU. It is hardly a surprise that this specimen is unlisted, as it comes from an old collection which has been off the market for at least the better part of three decades. This piece has it all, from vivid ink colors to sharp pen signatures, and from oversize margins all around to incredible eye appeal. Fewer than 300 $50 Brown Backs are known from every bank in the country combined, and less than 10% of that number are listed in the census as Uncirculated. Few, if any, of those 30 odd examples could possess the quality and eye appeal of this lovely note. Gem Crisp Uncirculated." While the number of $50 Brown Backs has now exceeded the 300 level, the low percentage of Uncirculated pieces has not changed one iota. PCGS has now placed this note in a Gem New 66 holder, making this one of the very finest third party graded high denomination Brown Backs from any location.
