    Philadelphia, PA - $100 1875 Fr. 456 The Farmers & Mechanics NB Ch. # 538
    A very rare type and denomination, with the latest Kelly census showing fewer than eighty First Charter hundreds in existence, divided about two to one in favor of 1875s versus Originals. This piece is one of the nicest of any, and is well within the top quarter of the grade range for the type. The colors are bright, the paper quality excellent, and the only flaw a small area where a written initial over the president's signature has been partially removed. Any estimate here is basically just a guess, as $100 First Charters, especially those in nice grade, are offered so infrequently, but we would not be surprised at all to see this attractive PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 40 specimen, which has been off the market since a 1999 auction appearance (where it sold for over $30,000 in a much less sophisticated market) easily reach and quite possibly well exceed...
