Ellsworth, PA Serial Number 1 $5 Red Seal

Ellsworth, PA - $5 1902 Red Seal Fr. 587 NB of Ellsworth Ch. # (E)6929
A lovely serial number 1 $5 Red Seal with great color and eye appeal. PCGS Choice About New 55, with the bold pen signature of James W. Ellsworth as President. Mr. Ellsworth was a Chicago native who had been a director of the 1892-1893 Columbian Exposition. Mr. Ellsworth was an industrialist who invested in mines, but who had a reformist streak. Coming to western Pennsylvania, he decided to create a company town which would provide its workers with decent, affordable brick homes along with other modern amenities. His agents were sent abroad to recruit miners, many of whom came from England and Wales, although countries as diverse as Sweden and Poland were represented. As the town and the mines grew, the dream of inexpensive housing for all faded, and the community became just another company dominated mining community, the likes of which abounded in coal country. This is one of two serial number 1 Red Seals known from this bank, with the other, which is in the same grade, having sold for $5175 back in 2010.
