    Description

Chambersburg, PA - $5 Original Fr. 397b The National Bank of Chambersburg Ch. # 593 Very Good-Fine.
One of only two First Charter notes recorded from the first of two note issuers to operate in this south central Pennsylvania community that was almost completely burned to the ground by Confederate raiders in July, 1864. This circulated $5 has nice color for the grade and the dark signatures of Cashier G(eorge) R. Messersmith and President E(dmund) Culbertson, but a piece off the right end was severed and reattached with tape. There are also mounting remnants on the back.
