Description

Unique for the Bank $100 National Gold Bank Note

Oakland, CA - $100 Original National Gold Bank Note Fr. 1166 The Union National Gold Bank Ch. # 2266
It is a rare occasion indeed for any sale to offer even one $100 National Gold Bank Note, but to offer three such examples in a single sale is simply unprecedented in modern times. This is indeed one of the crown jewels of the Eureka Collection, as it is one of only seven examples known for the type and denomination and the only example known from Oakland. While the existence of this piece has been known since it appeared as part of the fabled Grinnell holdings in Barney Bluestone's March 1945 Grinnell sale, that appearance marked the last offering of this note at public auction until its appearance here this evening. Your cataloger has worked long and hard at coming up with an appropriate estimate for this unique item, but how does one estimate any item where no price on earth could possibly produce another such example? If rarity and desirability are any guide, our estimate here will likely prove conservative on this unique numismatic rarity. PCGS Fine 12, with a couple of minor professional restorations that are barely worthy of mention and affect nothing on a note of this rarity.
