Norfolk, Virginia Serial Number 1 $5 Brown Back - Unique for State
Norfolk, VA - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 469 Norfolk NB
Ch. # 3368 PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ★ .
This is a truly extraordinary note for the state of Virginia for many reasons. It is the only serial number 1 $5 Brown Back listed in the census for any bank in the state and it now becomes the only number 1 Brown Back of any denomination from the Old Dominion to have crossed the auction block. This gorgeous note has long been recorded in the census but it has been listed without a grade and its whereabouts were unknown. Boldly pen signed by bank president C. G. Ramsey and cashier C(aldwell) Hardy (1852-1923), both prominent residents of the Norfolk area, this beautiful note is as pretty as it is rare and it has the look of at least a Choice New within its holder. Regardless of its assigned grade, it is easily the greatest Virginia National to be publicly offered in quite some time. It is certain to be of great interest to not only collectors of Norfolk banks and Virginia, in general, but also to anyone who just appreciates great Nationals. Any estimate for the truly unique is merely a guess but, if rarity and desirability is any guide, it should reach or exceed...
