    Newly Reported Canandaigua Serial Number 1 1875 $5

    Canandaigua, NY - $5 1875 Fr. 405 The Ontario County National Bank Ch. # 2765 PCGS Extremely Fine 45PPQ.
    One of the pleasures that catalogers all too seldom enjoy is the discovery of previously unknown items, and this note certainly falls into that category. It represents a true miracle of survival as this Ontario County bank was only in business for five years, opening in 1882 and then disappearing forever in 1887. During that brief time, it issued just a small quantity of Series 1875 $5s and, as of 1910, had a mere $210 outstanding. Until this evening, there had not even been a rumor about a note surviving from this obscure Ontario County charter which is certainly understandable considering its small issuance. Tonight, we are pleased to offer a wonderful new discovery from here - the very first note issued by the bank. Bearing serial number 1 and plate position "A," it was likely set aside by one of the bank's officers - perhaps bank president Horatio W. Perkins or cashier Frank R. Drury who both signed the note - and then held in the family for generations and now it is available for one lucky collector to enjoy tonight. Fortuitously, it is as pretty as it is rare with all of its original ink colors and dark pen signatures. A couple of very light storage folds are noted but, otherwise, this lovely note appears to have been signed by the officers this morning. Estimating a flaming New York rarity such as this is difficult - a typical serial number 1 First Charter Five from New York State usually sells in the $12,000 to $15,000 area but this wonderful note is anything but typical and could fetch in the range of...
