Newly Reported Louisiana First Charter $50
Unique in Private Hands

New Orleans, LA - $50 1875 Fr. 444 The Hibernia National Bank Ch. # 2086 PMG Very Fine 30.
An incredible new discovery which may be the single rarest Louisiana note that we have ever had the opportunity to offer to the collecting fraternity. Prior to this evening, just one First Charter $50 was known on the entire state of Louisiana, that being a 1875 $50 on a different New Orleans bank that is permanently ensconced in the holdings of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, according to the National Currency Foundation census. Considering that a mere 24,000 First Charter $50s were issued for the entire State of Louisiana, any reported example of these early high denomination notes is a true miracle of survival. Fortunately, the newly surfaced piece we are privileged to offer this evening is a quite lovely note with even wear, penned signatures of Cashier Jno. G. Devereux and President J. C. Morris, and attractive colors which are accentuated by a wide swath of blue end paper. The vignette of the Embarkation of the Pilgrims on the back is particularly lifelike and the note's overall eye appeal certainly belies its assigned grade. Any estimate for such a significant piece of Louisiana financial history, which can only be taken home by one lucky bidder tonight, is simply a guess. However, as a guide, over the past few years, we have sold comparably graded 1875 $50s from commoner states like Illinois and Iowa in the $40,000 to $70,000 range. We will be conservative in our estimate and let the bidders decide who takes home this magnificent Louisiana trophy note tonight.
