Unique for the Bank & TownNew Market, VA - $20 1902 Plain Back Fr. 657 The First NB Ch. # (S)10568
This is the only example known to have survived from this short lived Shenandoah County bank, which issued for only four years before disappearing in 1918. Even Elvin Miller, who spent the better part of two decades searching out Virginia rarities, never owned a note from this community, as this bank was unreported until this specimen surfaced in 1998. It was acquired five years later at the Emmett Brooks collection sale, where it fetched twice as much as it had in 1998 when it sold for $12,650, and then sold again for over $10,000 as part of the Old Line collection in June of 2010. Expect a similar result this evening, as any collector hoping to acquire a set of Virginia Nationals by town or bank needs this unique note to complete their set. PMG Very Fine 20, a most attractive piece with bright inks and paper along with sharp two color signatures.
