Unique for the Bank and Town

New Market, VA - $20 1902 Plain Back Fr. 657 The First NB Ch. # (S)10568
This is the only known example to have survived from this short lived Shenandoah County bank, which issued for only four years before disappearing in 1918. Even Elvin Miller, who spent the better part of two decades searching out Virginia rarities, never owned a note from this community, as this bank was unreported until this example surfaced in 1998. Luckily for collectors, it is as attractive as it is rare, grading Very Fine-Extremely Fine with bright two color signatures. This note brought $6600 when it last sold, and it likely will bring every dollar of that and more this evening.
From Lyn Knight's August 1998 auction sale.
