Randolph, NE Serial Number 1 Uncut Sheet
Randolph, NE - $10 1929 Ty. 2 The First NB Ch. # 7421 Uncut SheetA great serial number 1 uncut sheet from this scarce Cedar County bank that is a new discovery and which is being offered to the collecting fraternity for the first time. This sheet, which has been in the consignor's family for several decades, represents not only the first Type Two $10 sheet that this charter issued but it also contains the first examples of this type and denomination to be reported from this institution. The notes also bear the signature of James F. Toy as President, a member of the Toy banking family that controlled several National Banks in western Iowa along with this institution and the First NB of Hudson, South Dakota, all of which were within a fifty mile radius of each other. The sheet also exhibits a pair of pencilled initials between the fifth and sixth notes indicating that it likely was once part of the massive Col. Green holdings. The fact that this sheet came to us from Nebraska leads one to surmise that, after the disposition of the Green collection, the sheet made its way back to the Randolph area. At that point, it was rolled up and placed in a small cardboard tube (which accompanies this lot) where it resided for the next 70-plus years until it was recently consigned to us. While the sheet shows little in the way of fold evidence and retains good color and bold, original embossing, it has sustained some handling and has also acquired some minor edge tears and staining. However, those flaws do little to detract from this sheet's overall pleasing appearance. PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45 Net, and a great opportunity for today's generation of collectors.
