    Description

Saint Louis, MO - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 474 The NB of Commerce Ch. # (M)4178 PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
Another in this wonderfully well-matched grouping of four consecutive $5 St. Louis Brown Backs. The state seal depicted on the reverse of each is the only one used on Missouri notes, and is identical in most respects to the seal adopted by the state in 1822, the year after Missouri joined the Union. A pair of rather harmless looking bears supports an elliptical shield containing an eagle, another bear (this said to represent the resources of the state and juxtaposed with the American eagle), and a crescent. As indicated by the official state website, "The crescent symbolizes Missouri at the time of the state seal's creation, a state of small population and wealth which would increase like the new or crescent moon; it also symbolizes the 'second son', meaning Missouri was the second state formed out of the Louisiana Territory." The motto Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto, which means, "Let the welfare of the people be the supreme law", is found on a streamer placed just below the shield.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
