Description

Westminster, MD - $5 Original Fr. 397 The First NB Ch. # 742
Original Series fives are a very scarce type and denomination from The Old Line State, with the new census showing fewer than two dozen examples from all banks in the state combined. Westminster has supplied a small group of notes, with six high grade pieces coming from one small run. Only one has been offered since 2001, with no offerings since 2005. This example is a problem free PCGS graded Very Fine 35 specimen, with sharp colors and plenty of visual appeal. It bears the first of two seals used on Maryland notes, with this seal bearing no relation whatever to the "official" state seal of 1876, which bears the arms of the Calvert and Crossland families along with several other devices. That seal can be found on later issue Maryland Brown Backs. The seal found on this note depicts a bare breasted Justice holding a sword and scales, a merchant ship at a wharf, a cornucopia of produce, and a scene which may, or may not be, Baltimore city.
