Unique Oakland, Maryland Red SealOakland, MD - $5 1902 Red Seal Fr. 587 The Garrett NB Ch. # (E)6588
We are pleased to offer to the collecting fraternity this evening the only reported Red Seal from this scarcer western Maryland bank. Named after the county in which it operated, the bank opened for business in 1903 and therefore began its note issue with Third Charter Red Seals. However, the bank was not to be a long-lived venture as it was closed by the receiver shortly before Christmas in 1933. While a handful of Blue Seals have turned up over the years, a Red Seal from the charter had eluded even the most dedicated Maryland collectors. This piece is as pretty as it is rare, with bright paper, light, even wear, a bold red overprint, dark signatures, and low serial number 19 as a bonus. A great Maryland trophy note fit for the finest of collections. PMG Very Fine 30.
Estimate: $12,500 - $17,500.
