    Description

Baltimore, MD - $10 1882 Brown Back Fr. 481 The Merchants National Bank Ch. # (E)1336 PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
This bank was organized by legendary Baltimore businessman and philanthropist Johns Hopkins, who signed notes as the institution's first President. Unfortunately, despite a healthy issue of almost 29,000 sheets of Original Series notes, not a single example is known today. This note's signer as President, D.H. Thomas, succeeded to that office as President of the Merchants-Mechanics National Bank when the two institutions merged in 1912. With wonderful color and no evidence of circulation, this is easily the finest note reported from this large-only charter.
