    Description

Portland, ME - $1 Original Fr. 380 The Canal NB Ch. # 941
While this was Portland's second largest issuer of large notes, early examples from here are virtually non-existent, with the census showing just one First Charter (a lower grade Lazy Deuce) and one Brown Back, which is graded as "Fair." This piece comes from a most unusual source, a small cash hoard from northern New England consisting of mostly US and Canadian $1 and $2 bills from the 1860's through the early 1880's. Not all of the notes were from New England or Canada, of course, as the newly discovered $1 Santa Fe, Territory of New Mexico specimen will attest, but a fair number, including this piece, trace their provenance to that source. Well circulated but intact Very Good.
